The county is part of the Muscatine, IA Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is included in the larger Davenport-Moline, IA-IL Combined Statistical Area. Muscatine County has a rich history that is still celebrated today. It was formed in 1836 as a part of Wisconsin Territory, and it was named after Muscatine Island in the Mississippi River. The first European Americans settled in the area in 1833, and it quickly became a hub for trade and transportation. Today, visitors can learn more about the county's fascinating history by visiting the many museums and historical sites scattered throughout the area.
The county's courthouse is a testament to its rich history. The original courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1864, but a replacement was built on the same site by 1866. Located in the scenic area west of West Liberty, Iowa, the Beers and St. John Company Coach Inn is a fascinating glimpse into the state's past. Built in 1842 by Beers and St. John and Egbert T. Smith, this two-story frame structure was an important stop on the Muscatine-Iowa City route, where horses and drivers were switched and travelers rested during their journeys.
At the time, Iowa was still a territory, and Iowa City was the capital. The inn was a popular crossroads where the Muscatine-Iowa City route crossed with the Davenport-Iowa City route, and it played a significant role in the transportation of goods and people across the state.
The inn's basic design was a copy of Smith's previous home on Long Island, New York, giving it a unique blend of East Coast style and Midwestern sensibility. The siding, windows, doors, and interior millwork were constructed in Cincinnati and shipped by steamboat to Iowa, reflecting the importance of river transportation during that time.
Today, visitors to the Beers and St. John Company Coach Inn can explore the historic building and imagine what life was like in the early days of Iowa. The first floor features a foyer, a large gathering room, and two dining rooms where travelers would have enjoyed a hearty meal after a long journey. Although the kitchen is now gone, the second floor still boasts four large bedrooms and a smaller room that was used by the stagecoach drivers.
The inn's history is also marked by tragedy, as Smith's wife is buried on the property along with a family who died while staying here. The inn closed in 1855 with the arrival of the railroad, but the building was converted into a house and still stands as a testament to Iowa's early days.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016, the Beers and St. John Company Coach Inn is a must-visit for anyone interested in Iowa's rich history and heritage.
